Good blokes doing
better things.
What started as a one off walk for men’s mental health awareness, has now evolved into a group of male volunteers that dedicate their time to give back to local community.
About
Blokes Walk & Talk
Like many community organisations, BW&T began in the wake of tragedy. Following the loss of two identical twin brothers in Canberra, who took their lives together, what was intended to be a one-off walk to raise awareness for men’s mental health quickly became something much bigger. It became clear there was a real need, not just to talk about men’s mental health, but to better support it.
The first walk was meant to be a small gathering of mates. But when members of the public turned up, shared stories, and walked alongside one another, it was obvious this wasn’t going to be a one-time event. Since then, BW&T walks have continued across Canberra and expanded into other states, hosted by individuals and organisations who believe in the power of connection and conversation.
While BW&T focuses on men’s mental health, our biggest supporters have often been women working behind the scenes and on the ground. You don’t have to be a man to host a walk. There’s something incredibly powerful about seeing women step up to host walks in support of the men in their lives, helping create safe, welcoming spaces for conversation and connection.
There’s no right or wrong way to be involved. Whether you host a walk with one mate, bring together a larger group, do it regularly, or just once, every walk, short or long, helps raise awareness and break down the stigma around men’s mental health.
As BW&T continued to grow, our founder, Craig, spent time speaking with people in workplaces and communities and noticed something else emerging. Many men didn’t just want to walk and talk, they wanted more purpose. They wanted to do good and give back in meaningful ways.
From that, BW&T evolved beyond walks alone. Today, we are building a community and volunteer network of good men doing better things in their local communities. We connect smaller charities and organisations that need support with men from our community who are ready to show up and help.
Even as the stigma around men’s mental health slowly begins to shift, we’re honest about the fact that this is still hard. While many men like the idea of going for a walk or joining a group like BW&T, taking that first step can still feel challenging, and worries about perception remain very real.
Breaking that stigma is something we can only do together. It doesn’t matter what state you live in or where you’re at in life, every small action makes a difference, and together those small actions can have a lasting impact on someone else’s life.
Host a walk
Hosting a walk with BW&T is simple, supported, and makes a real difference.
Whether you’re an individual, part of a company, a sporting team, or a female supporting the men in your life,
every walk helps break the stigma around men’s mental health and shows that someone cares.
Individuals
Not sure where to begin? Hosting
a walk is easier than you think.
Just click the button, submit a short form, and one of our BW&T members will reach out to guide you.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s a one-off walk or something you want to grow over time. Nor does it matter if it’s just you and one other person, or a larger group. Sometimes it’s as simple as getting a few mates together, walking around your local community, and starting the conversation.
No bloke has ever regretted turning up to a walk, and your courage to take that first step might be exactly the support someone else needs.
Companies
& Organisations
If we truly want to break
the stigma around men’s mental health, it starts in the workplace.
Whether your organisation has a single office or a national presence, hosting regular walks is one of the most effective ways to support your people.
Team members, both male and female, can share stories that resonate and build connection. We’ve seen managers, CEOs, and directors champion walks, showing a human side of leadership.
Whether your walk involves a large group or multiple smaller groups at different times, the outcome is the same: raising awareness, creating support, and helping break the stigma
in workplaces nationwide.
Community
& Sporting Teams
Community groups and sporting teams are perfect environments
to host a walk.
Teams already provide an outlet from everyday pressures and a chance to spend time with mates, making it easier for meaningful conversations
to happen.
Walks can be held during pre-season, training, mid-season, or post-season, and could be laps of the oval, a stroll around the local area, or even swimming laps of a pool. It’s not about the size of the effort, it’s about showing the support is there.
Sporting teams offer one of the
most natural and powerful ways to encourage men to open up.
Females Supporting
the Guys
This one is for all the amazing females out there.
If there’s a man in your life who might be struggling, hosting a walk is a simple and powerful way to show support.
You can host with your female friends, a mix of friends, or anyone who wants to help. By creating that opportunity, you can encourage a bloke to get off the couch, get moving, and start thinking more clearly.
Some of BW&T’s biggest supporters are women, and by hosting a walk, you can make a real difference, showing the men in your life that someone cares and is there to support them.
If you can save one life,
it’s worth it.
Become a
volunteer.
Becoming a BW&T volunteer is simple, rewarding and meaningful. All it takes is joining our WhatsApp chat group, where we share requests from the wider community seeking help with charitable organisations that are short-staffed.
No volunteer ever goes alone. There is always someone from our community by your side, so you will have support every step of the way. Once a request comes through, it is shared in the chat group, and only those who have the time and desire
to help respond. You are never expected to attend every event, it is all about what works for you.
Volunteering with BW&T is about more than just helping out, it is about giving back, having purpose, and making a real difference in your community. It is also fun, social, and a great way to meet new people who share your values. Every event you support helps smaller organisations achieve their goals and strengthens connections within your local area. Many volunteers find that showing up not only helps others, but also gives them a sense of pride, purpose, and connection that goes beyond the walk itself.
Currently, our volunteer group is based in Canberra. However, if you are interstate and want to join the BW&T community or start a volunteer team in your local area, we would love to hear from you.
